Whether you’re a new or experienced tshirt design seller, knowing what kind of designs to make will determine your level of success.
In today’s post, I’ll be sharing my favorite tool to find the best niches for tshirt designs.
Disclaimer: As you guys know, I am very strict about what products or services I recommend. I only recommend products or services that I personally use, and can stand behind. With that said, the niche research tool in this post is one that I have vetted, personally use, and highly recommend.
This tool is called: Merch Informer Competition Checker
Important Strategy Breakdown
Selling tshirt designs with print on-demand is all about scale.
The real money is made when a seller can create and upload a lot of great designs.
In previous years, the sellers who made the most money were those who made a couple really good designs and then used paid Facebook Advertising to get sales.
Since more people have started trying this strategy (using paid Facebook Ads) it has lost its effectiveness.
The strategy that works the best now, and is built to last no matter how many people try it, is creating and uploading a lot of great designs.
This strategy works because the main print on-demand sites (Teespring, Merch by Amazon, and Redbubble) all do marketing on your tshirt designs for you (for free).
This means, the more great designs you can upload, the great offers they will be marketing for you.
In other words, why go fishing with only a couple lines in the water when you can go fishing with a lot of lines in the water.
Here’s Where Niche Comes In
Now that we understand the overall strategy, it becomes even more effective when we know what kind of tshirt designs to make.
Simply making a lot of great designs (in any niche) WILL work. Great designs will always sell in time.
However, if we can do a little niche research before deciding what kind of tshirt designs to make, we can sell even more.
To continue the fishing example, fishing with a lot of lines in the water in random places WILL catch fish, but fishing with a lot of lines in the water in places you know there are hungry fish will work BETTER.
So How Do We Find The Best Niches?
I’ve used many research tools in the past and there’s one tool that has become the clear winner.
This tool is called: Merch Informer Competition Checker

They have earned my recommendation for 2 main reasons:
- It’s Simple
- It’s Effective
Simple
All you have to do is type in the niche you are thinking about making designs in, and click search.
That’s it.
You can search as many niches as you want, the tool is unlimited.
You do not have to translate overall Google search competition into tshirt specific data.
In under a minute you will know whether or not to make designs in that niche.
Effective
The best part, it gives you a letter rating A or F.
If you get an A, you’re good to go.
If you get an F, don’t do it.
Additionally, it shows you how many competitors are in the niche.
And, it shows you the best selling designs in the niche (and how many they are selling per month).

Pro Tip: Try variations of the niche (example: “fish” and “fishing”). You may find that one will work while the other will not. If one of them is good, use that specific keyword in your listing information when you launch designs in that niche.
